Registering to be a voter in Malaysia

The deadline to register as a voter in Malaysia is on the 31st of March 2007. Call me cynical but what sense does it make for one to register ourselves as voters when elections are rigged and gerry-mandering is all too common? I don’t see the logic - perhaps someone can convince me otherwise.

In other news, the Malaysian government has sent a circular to all local media with the message that news originating from the Malaysian blogosphere is not to be reported in the mass media. I predicted that the government would seek to control news originating online and true to the colors of scheming politicians, scarcely two weeks later, the circular mandating the ban was issued.

Given the large number of scandals plaguing Badawi’s government, with a substantial number of those scandals originating from online sources, we can expect that given several more dirty (and juicy) stories, the scheming politicians will start taking severe action to stop further damage to their reign. Is the end nigh? I certainly hope not - after all, it is said that the Internet routes around censorship, right? Right? Why are we silent all of a sudden?
