Beijing Olympics 2008
Before supporting the Beijing 2008 Olympics, remember that the Chinese government has severely violated basic human right pledges:
“Thousands of people who pursued their faith outside officially sanctioned churches were subjected to harassment and many to detention and imprisonment. Thousands of people were sentenced to death or executed. Migrants from rural areas were deprived of basic rights. Severe repression of Uighurs in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region continued, and freedom of expression and religion continued to be severely restricted in Tibet and among Tibetans elsewhere … Torture and ill-treatment remained widespread. Common methods included kicking, beating, electric shocks, suspension by the arms, shackling in painful positions, cigarette burns, and sleep and food deprivation.“
And, certainly, their support for the brutal military regime in Burma has resulted in thousands of dead monks in the recent uprising.
I will be boycotting the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
